Golden beauty like rhodium and platinum by Clemens.
Rhodium is very bright, and highly reflective. When the rhodium plating wears through, the colour of the actual “white” alloy can be seen. Rhodium plating of white gold is legal in most countries. For good technical and economic reasons, the term white has been used elastically to encompass a wide range of colour and this has led to consumer dissatisfaction. Rhodium is metal that is similar in color to platinum that adds a hard, bright white layer over the top of the alloyed gold. This makes the gold look more even white, although over time this will wear away and the more true off white gold color will show through. Rhodium is a metal ten times as costly as gold. It is not a feasible material to make solid jewelry from because it is too stressed and brittle, but rhodium is fabulous as a plating for jewelry because it is glitteringly, dazzlingly, white and mirror-like. Platinum engagement rings can be resized in the future. Platinum is quite expensive, needs greater temperatures than gold, and is generally considered harder to work with than gold, although it is ideal for use in diamond settings. At least three patents were issued for different “recipes” of white gold alloys during the 1920’s, using different components to produce the whitening or “bleaching” effect. Platinum wedding rings are also available. We strive to make wearing contemporary wedding rings affordable.
